Change car tires - Loosen lug nuts before or after jacking up the car?

I see that the tire shop generally taking the lug nuts off AFTER lifting up the car. Then, I read my car manual which suggest to loosen my lug nuts first BEFORE jacking up the car.

Is the difference because of the impact gun that allows loosening while the car is jacked up, but a manual loosen (without an impact gun) may be difficult while jacked up?

The drive wheels don't matter because they are in a locked position on the ground or up. On the other hand, the non-drive wheels will spin if they are up so you have to just break them loose (not all the way off) before you lift the car. The garage uses an impact wrench that moves so fast it dosn't matter.

tyre nuts are usually so tight that to get them started (at home), you have to stand on the end of the tyre wrench with all your weight. This is obviously safer if the tyre is on the ground, with handbrake on.

So just loosen them a half or quarter turn each, then jack up and complete. When you have the new tyre on, and nuts as tight as you can manage by hand, lower the jack completely, and stand on that wrench again, to tighten the nuts to the max - no need to jump up and down!
It is easier to loosen the lugnuts before the vehicle is jacked up because the tire tends to spin while trying to loosen the nuts when the tire is airborne. In addition, try to tighten the lugnuts as much as you can before the tire is back on the ground to make sure the wheel is all the way on
Its easier to loosen the lugs first that way the tire dont spin on you after the car is jacked up. Impack has way more power than any human. you can do it after but someone might get hurt bad if the lug wrench goes flying from the tire turning on you.
They loosen them up in the air because the impact wrench has enough torque to loosen the lug nuts without spinning the wheel. It can be done manually in the air,but it is much harder, and is best done before jacking the car up.
Basically yes . You can %26quot;loosen%26quot; the lug nuts before jacking , but only LOOSEN . In other words just start them to turning , not take completely off .
do it after your up. and make sure that you alternate putting them on like a star(The lug nuts). go opposite of the previous so as to make the wheel even when its on your car.
When the vehicle is in the air it is much harder to remove the lug nuts manually becaues of tire spin.
