Can you change a car from a manual to automatic transmission in a car?

I have a crashed a car (96 chevy cavalier) beyond repair of the body and it was an automatic (the engine in not damaged) my dad was going to buy a used car (98 chevy cavalier) with the engine shot (its a manual) would it be possible for him to take the engine out of our current one and put it in the one we could buy even though the one we would buy is a standard?

Yes, you would have to change a host of things. Pedal set, guage cluster, ecu, various odds and ends.

IMO, it would be cheaper and less headache to purchase a running car without intentions of swapping anything.

if it is the same engine then its easy. just swap the flexplate for the clutch assembly. Get a new clutch/pressure plate, and throwout bearing. there was one year of cavalier that had a wet clutch inside the tranny. Avoid this one. not sure on year.
sure
Unless you have a lot of mechanical experience, don'tt go there !
It is possible but it depends on the car and parts to determine how much you will have to change. If you're simple swapping the engine it should be easier than swapping the transmissions.
Buying two non-working cars and grafting into one runner keeps a lot of garages in business.
