How to change Car ownership for insurance?

I just bought used car yesterday(paid completely with cash). In order to add it own to my fathers insurance does the car need to be in his name and if so how do I go about doing it. the car is currently in my name and is it even legal for me to be driving it right now? I remember my uncle telling me something that you are automaticly covered when you first buy a viehicle!|||It is not safe to drive until it is insured. Cars are insured, not drivers. Being listed on someone else%26#039;s policy has nothing to do with insuring the car you just bought. Buy some insurance for it before you move it one inch. It will be more expensive to insure because it is in your name as opposed to the parent(s) you live with. It would be cheaper to have the car put in the name of the parent that you live with. To change ownership from you to your Dad, you and Dad should take the title and go to your DMV , pay the fees and make Dad the owner.|||Your father must have an insurable interest in the %26quot;viehicle%26quot; in order to insure it. You must go to DMV and transfer the title to his name or both your names (check with your insurance company...they may only want dad%26#039;s name).

You do realize with the car being in your father%26#039;s name, that if you injure/kill someone in an accident, whether it be your fault or not, your father is liable and can lose everything he has worked his entire life for?|||Normally, it needs to be in his name to be on his policy.

If you already had a policy in effect, it may be automatically covered under your name if the policy is still in effect. If you don%26#039;t have a policy, it cannot be automatically covered on something that doesn%26#039;t exist?

So, to recap, if it is in your name, it probably isn%26#039;t insured on your Dad%26#039;s policy and if you don%26#039;t have a policy in effect in your name, it probably isn%26#039;t legal to be driving it right now. What are you doing for plates?

You most likely would have to transfer it to your Dad%26#039;s name so it can be on his policy.
