Are there any paperworks required to repaint/change your car to a different color?

I'm thinking about buying a car but I dont like the color of it. Can I just buy it and repaint it hassel free or will I need to notify the DMV and insurance company of the changes? Thanks.

The only papers you'll need are maybe some newspaper to mask off areas you don't want overspray to hit.

In most states you must get the paper work at DMV corrected to match the car's color. No new vin will be issued. The reason is simple, when a police officer pulls you over he will run the tag many times before he checks the driver out. If the colors don't match then the driver is suspect which can lead to unnecessary hassles. Many times the insurance company could care less, but let the agent know just to stay to the good side there too.

Now if you are changing from say a Cherry red to Black Cherry red, I am not so sure that DMV has to be notified as it may not be classified as a color change.
more than likely, you will need to re-register it in the new color so the vin shows a different color, and yea your insurance company will need to know the different color change. for more information, just go to your nearest body shop, and ask a couple questions on that, but pretty sure thats all you will need to do.
there,s no paper work. you can feel free to paint it any color you want but no obscene language because you can get stopped for that but as for painting it a different color then go for it.
